How to navigate Christmas in London with little ones

With December in full swing, the festive season is truly upon us! London lights up with magical displays, Christmas markets and seasonal events! It’s the perfect time to make memories! I thought I’d share some top tips for enjoying the best of Christmas activities in London, whilst keeping things calm and cosy for your little ones.

Balance is Key

While there are so many wonderful things to do, it’s important to strike a balance. Planning a few fun festive outings alongside some cosy family time at home helps ensure little ones don’t get overstimulated, which can easily interfere with their sleep. A tired little one is never anyone’s idea of festive fun!

Festive Outings Worth Considering

    • Christmas Lights and Winter Markets: London’s streets and parks look incredible this time of year. Covent Garden, Regent Street, and Southbank Winter Market are all family-friendly and full of festive cheer. Maybe keep it to daytime or one evening a week to avoid overtired little ones.

    • Santa Experiences and Pantomimes: Meeting Santa at the Fujifilm Santa’s Grotto in Covent Garden or watching a Christmas show, such as Jack and the Beanstalk at The King’s Head Theatre, is always a treat for children. However, be mindful of long queues and noisy crowds. Booking in advance and opting for earlier showtimes can help little ones enjoy the experience without it becoming overwhelming and overtired.

    • Ice Skating: Skating rinks pop-up all-over London, from the Natural History Museum to Somerset House. Even if your child isn’t a pro, just wobbling around on the ice can be loads of fun – and it burns off some energy too!

Cosy Family Time at Home

Don’t underestimate the joy of staying in. Simple activities like decorating the tree together, baking festive treats, or watching a favourite Christmas film can be just as magical and often less stressful than a day out. Little ones thrive on routine, and quiet day can help them stay well rested and happy.

Tips for Keeping Things Calm

    • Limit outings per week to avoid overstimulation.

    • Pack snacks, water, and a favourite comforter for trips out.

    • Keep bedtime routines consistent, even during the festive season.

    • Build in downtime at home between busy days out.

Christmas is a wonderful time to create memories as a family, and with a little planning, it can be joyful for everyone, including the adults! Remember, the magic doesn’t have to come from non-stop activities; sometimes the simplest moments make the most lasting memories.
