Family is at the centre of our lives, providing love, support and a sense of belonging. As parents, caregivers, or family members, we want to nurture these bonds and provide an environment where everyone feels appreciated and understood.
A tool that can be used to enhance connections in a family can be through understanding and using each family members ‘love language’.
The five love languages are: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Acts of Service, Physical Touch, and Receiving Gifts.
Words of Affirmation
Verbal affirmations can support the development of children’s self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. Using encouraging words and words of appreciation with children, will allow them to feel seen and supported.
How to implement this:
- Praise and encourage: Telling your child ‘I love you’ or ‘I’m proud of you’ can work miracles. Taking the time to praise a child with their efforts in a specific task such as ‘I love the way you helped mummy load the dishwasher’.
- Validate emotions: Acknowledging how a child feels can show empathy. Comments such as ‘I can see you’re feeling cross, and that’s ok’ or ‘I’m here’. This highlights the importance of their emotions.
Quality time
We live in such a busy world, and it can be tricky to set family time aside! Although, for some children ‘quality time’ is their love language. Therefore, being present and engaging makes all the difference.
How to implement this:
- Create a family tradition: Something simple, such as having an evening meal all together or a trip to the bakery every Saturday morning.
- Engagement: Being fully present without any electrical devices and being fully involved with the activity. It may be something as simple as playing their favourite game with them such as hide and seek.
- Plan family days out: Plan time to go on family trips such as the park, swimming or a woodland walk.
Acts of service
For some children love is shown through actions. Providing children with these acts can express love, creating long term positive relationships.
How to implement this:
Help each other: Helping your child with schoolwork, taking care of household tasks or preparing a favourite family meal together. Displaying love through teamwork and cooperation.
Teach the value of service: As a family, you can get involved with volunteering or helping a neighbour.
Physical touch
Physical touch is a way of expressing love with your child. Whether it’s a hug, a kiss on the cheek or a simple hand on their shoulder.
How to implement this:
Offer affection freely: Simple gestures like hugs or holding their hand will enable them to feel secure and loved. These gestures will build a strong emotional bond.
Comfort during difficult times: If your child is feeling upset, offering a comforting touch can enable them to feel safer and more supported. This may be through rubbing their back, holding their hand or simply sitting close to them provides this comfort.
Make playful touches fun: Physical touch can be fun! Kids love high fives for praising their efforts and achievements or a playful tickle!
Receiving gifts
Many may view this as materialistic love language. However, it’s the thought and effort behind the gift rather than its value.
How to implement this:
Give thoughtful gifts: The gift doesn’t need to be expensive. It may be a handmade card, a special treat that reminds them of an experience you’ve shared. The key factor is, it’s the thought that counts!
Make special occasions meaningful: Birthdays, a holiday or family milestone is a good chance to express love through a gift!
By recognising and nurturing each other’s love language, you can create a family environment where everyone feels cherished. It’s not about getting it right every time, what matters is making the effort to show love in ways that truly resonate with each family member. Consistency, not perfection, is the secret to keeping love alive and thriving.
