Looking for an easy way to keep the kids cool, entertained and active this summer? North London has plenty of brilliant parks where little ones can splash, play and burn off energy without spending a fortune.
As a sleep consultant, I love family activities that give children plenty of fresh air and physical activity while still supporting their nap and bedtime routines. A morning at a splash park can be a great way to enjoy the summer without completely disrupting sleep.

Here are five North London favourites to add to your summer list.
1. Clissold Park, Stoke Newington: My Top Pick!
Clissold Park is a brilliant all-rounder for a family day out. The free splash pad has water jets perfect for cooling off, while the park also has a fantastic playground, café and animal enclosures.
Sleep consultant tip: If your little one still naps, try a morning visit. Outdoor play followed by lunch and the journey home can set you up nicely for a good nap.
2. Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath
The paddling pool at Parliament Hill is a lovely option for younger children, with an excellent playground right next door. It’s easy to combine water play with climbing, running and exploring.
Parent tip: Bring plenty of snacks and a change of clothes. Little ones rarely want to leave the water on a warm day!
3. Priory Park, Hornsey
Looking for somewhere a little quieter? Priory Park is a lovely hidden gem with a seasonal paddling pool, playground and café.
It’s a great choice for families who prefer a more relaxed outing, with plenty of opportunity to switch between water and playground fun.
Sleep consultant tip: A calmer outing can be particularly helpful for children who become overwhelmed by busy, noisy environments. Happy children tend to make for happier evenings too!
If you’re after somewhere free and simple, Finsbury Park is a great option. The splash park has ground-level water jets for children to run, jump and cool off, plus plenty of open space for a full morning of fun.
Parent tip: Take a picnic or plenty of snacks and let them burn off some energy before heading home.
Whittington Park is a good option for toddlers and younger children, with an excellent playground alongside seasonal water-play features.
It’s simple, local and doesn’t require lots of organisation, perfect for a spontaneous summer outing.
My Top Splash Park Tips for Parents
A few simple things can make a hot-weather outing much easier:
- Go early or later: Aim for before 11am or after 3pm to avoid the busiest periods and strongest midday sun.
- Pack a splash-park bag: Swimwear, towels, sunscreen, a change of clothes and a waterproof bag for wet things are essentials.
- Take plenty of water: Children can become surprisingly dehydrated when running around in the sunshine.
- Reapply sunscreen: Water play can wash or rub sunscreen off more quickly.
- Check before you travel: Seasonal water-play areas can occasionally close for maintenance, so check the relevant local council website before setting off.
Keeping Your Child’s Sleep Routine on Track
If your child still naps, a morning splash-park trip can be a great way to get plenty of fresh air and physical activity without completely disrupting their usual routine.
If you’re heading out later in the day, keep an eye on your child becoming overstimulated and dysregulated. An overstimulated and dysregulated child can sometimes find it harder to settle at bedtime, even after a very active day.
Summer days out don’t mean you need to abandon your child’s sleep routine. A little flexibility is fine, but keeping roughly consistent nap and bedtime anchors can make those sunny days much easier for everyone.
